After graduating from Tama Art University, Wada Makoto (1936-2019) worked at Light Publicity and then widely as an illustrator and graphic designer. He has also worked as a bookbinder, film director, essayist, composer, animator, art director, and many other facets of his work, and his creativity knows no bounds. This exhibition is the first to explore the full scope of Makoto Wada's vast and diverse work. The exhibition will focus on topics essential to understanding Makoto Wada, and will introduce a wide variety of works created over the course of his 83-year life. We are sure that you will encounter a new aspect of Makoto Wada that you have never known before.

Also featured in this exhibition is a special display of works by Akira Uno (1934- ), who was active in the same era as Wada, including founding the Tokyo Illustrators ・ Club in 1964, and with whom Wada had a close friendship. The exhibition, centered on the collection of the Kariya Art Museum, introduces the creative activities of Wada and Uno in the 1960s, when they began their careers as young creators and Japanese graphic design flourished.
